Increasing Neutron Detection Sensitivity
It takes a neutron to free a neutron under special conditions. First, the neutron must be hit by a thermalized or slowed down neutron to be captured. This is done with Hydrogen atoms contained in Liquid hydrogen, water and many light plastics that have a high hydrogen count. The cheapest source of neutron emitting material is uranium ore itself taken directly from the earth. When rendering the rock into gravel and mixing it with poly-propylene plastic pellets (used in Injection Molding), and placed in a barrel or cylinder sides lined with boron or borated concrete you can make a narrow beam neutron emitter.
