A burning flame produces light, heat, air-flow and sound. The sound waves or mechanical vibrations have a distinct signature or spectrum depending on the purity of the combustible gas and air present. This can be further enhanced by the use of high voltage or high electrostatic potential, (modulated or not). (Electro-static/high Voltage, high fidelity acoustical speakers have been made in the past). This also holds true for the light spectrum lines produced. The Sound is also a function of the geometry or shape of the nozzles/ injectors and associated chimney or flue used. When contaminates or other particles/impurities are added, the resulting change in flow, pressure and temperatures produced change both the optical and sound characteristics.
I propose to use a common fuel source like propane to run a pilot light, which provides the heat, draft and light to power such a device. For portability and economy standard 5 gallon tanks shall be used with two stage flow regulators and fine renewable or expendable gas filters. A Flue or chimney with a specially designed combustion chamber in matched pairs with one being the standard and the other the sample flame. Each shall have an optical wedge to split spectral lines that will be collected by flat ribbon of parallel fiber optics going to matched color/spectral detectors. By using either a portable computer or standard personal computer to remove the standard optical signature from the sample and/or by using differential operational amplifiers to focus on the sample particles/impurities being added to the second flame. With a catalogue of spectral lines provided with each packet of software, the unknown contaminates can be narrowed down to just a few.
By using sound analysis of both flames a secondary database can be used to matrix or further narrow down the probability of contaminates. Since real world environments are a host of pollutants and minor dust contaminates a statistical analysis program be part of the packaged software. Also some pre-filtering may be required using cyclone separators and/or small HEPA filters. These filters can be either fixed or moving tapes, which shall be collectible for further analysis if needed. A time/Date stamp on moving filters is recommended. Such collectible filters should also be adaptable for analysis of airborne radioactivity.
Sound waves can be measured for intensity or volume and pitch/frequency by a number of different means. Carbon microphones are moderately sensitive, and crystal or piezoelectric microphones are even more sensitive. In some fluid flow/gas flow detection work, laser light or light from various light emitting diodes (L.E.D.) with photo detectors can be used to measure flow rates and mechanical vibrations/sound waves. Because each particle has a different physical size and density the modulation of the vibrations should change accordingly. A library or catalog of these characteristic colors of sound can also be part of the program software. By using two sources of matched flame, the characteristics of the flames shall be self-canceling so that variations of purity of combustible gases, variation in pressure and flow shall be factored out.
By using fluidic (fluid electronic) oscillators as part of the supply side of air flow, the total mass of the standard air flow versus the sample air flow can be measured. Fluidic flip-flop oscillators can use the rising heat of the pilot lights in their respective combustion chambers/ chimneys to create sound or other means of flow analysis. By determining average density of supply air/ contaminated air further narrows parameters until reasonable and reliable real time analysis can trigger pre-alarms for detailed samples and with further testing/calibration shall be reliable enough to initiate alarms and protective measures and/or decontamination procedures.

By allowing many different teams from various Military, Governments, Private companies and colleges and universities to experiment with this approach of using sound for chemical analysis the 11th hour need for affordable, rapid detection and protection from Chemical and Biological hazards can be met. Some may argue that this might be a real moneymaker, or that this has many applications and with-holding such technology gives one a distinct military advantage. It is way too late for such thoughts. The effort must be directed to getting this product out there, even in experimental form so as to protect both military resources and civilian and animal populations. An Attitude driven by greed, or desire for power over others yields only mass death. No reasonable human being should wish such a death by bio-warfare or chemical warfare. Since World War 1, The Great war it was proved that such mass attack is as fickle as where the wind blows and the water flows. The real problem lies in attitude brought about by false teachings which drive suicide cults to punish other human beings for short-comings with-in their own societies, and their failure to address and solve real human needs. When civilizations ignore higher law or natural law they self-destruct. Those laws are unchangeable and timeless. The lingering effects of these weapons of mass destruction will continue to kill and sterilize the earth of all life. Technology has made it possible for a few to enslave the many, using fear. Knowledge alleviates fear. Lack of Knowledge destroys. It is the common education of the Eternal truths upon which all existence is based. Ignoring danger only allows for it to breed in the dark places until even the light of day cannot even stop it. A cancer must be cut out or killed in place if the body is to survive. PS: Most laboratories looks for mono-causal answers, but the real world is poly-causal, complex environment.
