Combustion Chamber

Start with a gas pilot light in side of a chimney of sufficient height to induce draft.  The Cross section of the chimney shall be elliptical with the pilot light at one center/focus.  The detector of piezo-electric ceramic/crystal or carbon/crystal microphone placed at the matching elliptical second center (NOTE: due to overheating concerns a pick-up tube that directs sounds to a remote detector man be necessary).  The Chimney shall be of non-conductive glass or ceramic with the pilot light tube which could be electrically insulated from ground.  Place a top metallic screen and bottom screen on the chimney that may be charged with pulsed high voltage of either direct current or radio frequency currents as needed.  Flames fed resonant energy/sound tend to brighten noticeably, this effect should also repeat at higher frequencies. Change in Brightness should be monitored and recorded.  High Fidelity Acoustical speakers have been made from flames trapped between electrically charged/pulsed screens with conductive salts fed from above. A small window in the side of the chimney to direct the light of the flame into a fiber optic or other light pipe that passes light thru a prism/diffraction grating to a digital CCD camera/detector.  Allow for the insertion of filters or wet cells between the light and the prism/diffraction grating. Design the construction for ease of disassembly and cleaning.  Use Propane gas or other gas when practical/available.

One or Two Burner Detectors

It can be possible to use one pilot light/burner but two is recommended for accuracy in hostile environments where multiple or poly-causal factors can affect performance and reliability.  Each burner or pilot light shall have it’s own chimney/flue identical to each other. In an emergency one pilot/burner assembly can be made from parts of two with computer software designed for single or double burners operations.  When a single burner is used the system shall sample clean filtered air on a settable/changeable time period to give background noise for standard and elimination so that the output signals of just contaminants in the air stream are processed to match with computer library of spectral sounds and spectral light analysis to yield displayed information as to frequency, intensity, density per unit volume.  System shall also recognize by matching the installed catalogue/library any danger to property, human or animal life, and trigger warnings and/or alarms as needed.  Since sound are produced by mechanical vibrations in solids, liquids and gasses, fuel quality and environmental conditions: such as pressure, temperature, humidity, will affect output.  These variances can be filtered out, and by comparing recordings from prior samplings or second burner, detect any changes.  It is also possible to check individual samples by having a permanently installed wick or able to introduce a sample thru a small door or window into the burner/pilot flame area.

Since flames in flues can introduce a natural draft, air pumps that supply clean and contaminated air man not be necessary.  Available filters can yield a clean air sample for sampling and eliminating background noise such a gas/air type and purity.

When a two burner system is used, a differential amplifier shall be used to  amplify the contaminants detected by the two sources of sound and spectrum.  It is possible to heterodyne or reduce the frequency by using beat frequency the ultrasonic sounds to human audible levels for more portable simpler field use detectors.  Having the option to hear or not hear the flames is desirable feature.  Example: If you have a flame producing sounds at 24000 cycles per second and 26000 cycles per second and you heterodyne/beat the ultrasonic signal down with an oscillator at 20000 cycles per second, you will produce audible sounds of 4000 and 6000 cycles, well within the range of human hearing.  FM radios do this at much higher frequencies. Currently I have Electrical Plasma Leak Detectors, used in High Voltage Facilities and Radio Stations.  I have Both Military and Civilian versions, inexpensive kits for student use/experiments available from www.informationunlimited.com .  The plans, plans with parts or completely assembled units, are available at a reasonable cost.  These units were designed for listening to bats, insects, water and air flow/leaks.

Uses/Goals for Sound of a Flame Detectors

Currently no one uses ultra-sonic sounds for the detection and analysis of biological or chemicals.  This is a new tool for the rapid, reliable and very affordable system of detection/measurements for laboratory use, military field use and the protection of civilian populations along with their air, water and food supplies.  The goal it to mass produce detectors that shall work with existing computers/laptops needing only software, detector assembly and fuel source such as existing portable fuel tanks.  Estimated that 5 gallons could last half a year or more.  Use of existing monitoring stations such as weather stations that already feed into an internet network is recommended.  Also recommend the addition of affordable Geiger counters (or other radiation detectors) such as those available from www.blackcatsystems.com. (starting at $150 US with hardware and software.)  Their micro-geiger tube can detect alpha, beta and gamma/x-ray radiation, and has a net-workable software program that needs little improvements to make it more user-friendly/reliable.  These units take their power directly from the computer or laptop they are attached to.

Civil Defense Applications

Current events such as the mass deaths in the thousands that have occurred in the border regions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, from a combination of Ebola-Small Pox (Ebola-Pox) should be cause for concern.  Also very recent deaths from poor controls in a primitive bio-warfare lab in North Africa should also raise alarm bells.  Since 9/11 hundreds of the free worlds leading scientists, some from New Mexico have been suicide-ed or died strange deaths. The list of their names and conditions surrounding their deaths are publicly available on the internet from reliable sources.  Since President Bush #41 signed an executive order elimination civilian civil defense due to an assumed “Peace Dividend”.   There has been too little attention to protecting the ordinary US citizens by giving them the ability to protect themselves, their neighbors by an all volunteer force, properly equipped and properly trained citizens to supplement the county, state and federal first responders.  Portable (helmet  mounted?) units that only render burning flames to audible sounds is recommended, with users trained to recognize sounds and/or changes in sounds making it necessary to do further testing/analysis or take protective measures.

If proposed “Sound of a Flame” detectors were made available to individuals and institutions as well as professional responders for an estimated cost of $5,000 per unit or less (minus computer?), which would include detector, fuel regulators of standard available design and software they would be bought and used.  The National Laboratories and some of the more secure Universities should be employed in creating the software and standardizing the spectral light and spectral sound that when matrix-ed against each other would reduce fears, create jobs, make for a safer and healthier environment, and give chemists, doctors, and first responders greater ability to detect and prevent biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction from making a ghost town of the whole earth.  It was learned in the past that when men release chemicals, poison gas or plague weapons on the earth, ALL SUFFER LOSS.  The lessons of the past which has not been taught and has not been learned; shall cause men to repeat the mistakes of the past, with great sufferings and mass death.  The remaining spirit left in Pandora’s Box was the Spirit of Hope.  I hope that this gift of a new way of hearing and seeing will give Hope to Men, and this is a Gift of Heaven.
